Day 17 - Final Post

It has definitely been an interesting ride this term, and I’ve had a lot of fun working on my story. I know its sounds cliché, but its kind of like a journey. It’s the journey to the destination that’s fun. I’ve basically finished my project. It’s printed, finalized, ready to be handed in, and now there’s nothing to do. The problem is, I read it again and notice MORE changes to be made, places I want to go with it, and the only reason I’m not handing in a newer version is because I don’t want to go through the hassle of nicely printing it as a final product again.
At the beginning of the term I only knew one thing about my project; I wanted to write. My first story idea was wildly different than this, and as I tried to write I realized my motivation wasn’t there. So instead I read my old draft for my short story from fall term, The Great Grey Ghost. I loved where I went with it, and while in some ways I was satisfied with the ending and I thought it worked out very well, I wanted more. I really wanted to uncover the history of the well and why Jayne fell into it. I wanted to explore the landscape around him, add characters and a story with thick character development. But the problem was, I only had a month and a half to do it, and I knew it’d be a challenge.
I went to my family’s house near Arlington, Vermont for the weekend after I realized I would write what I thought would be a sequel to my story. I wandered the woods for hours, exploring the land on my own as Jayne had. I noticed the scenery and architecture of the towns around, and I began to picture the location in vivid detail before I even had the idea of what to write.
I returned to school and began writing. I pictured a woman in the garden Jayne had stumbled upon, but different. I began to follow the woman, and rather than writing a story, I wrote what I saw as I followed her. I began to realize that I was no longer writing a second part to my story from before, but I was writing a second chapter with many to follow, and by the third chapter I knew I wouldn’t be able to tell the story as I’d like in the time given to me.
So I finished my fourth chapter two weeks from the deadline and spend as much time as I could editing and reworking what I had. I wanted an ending that would leave people questioning, but still could sum it up in one way or another, so I added the ending with the owl and Daniel as it has now. Now I had a draft to hand around and get feedback. I had edited it the best of my ability (which is poor in some ways), and it was time to get a second and third party involved. Mr. Igoe had already read the second chapter, but I still gave him the entire draft and waited for his feedback overall. He actually understood the story, which I was proud for, but gave me back a lot of feedback as well. It started to make me realize my faults in writing, and made me more alert to my mistakes to come. I often repeated words much to often, and since then I’ve been trying not to as well. I also noticed how I can even be a bit over descriptive of certain things, and I’ve started to fix that as well. But as I work on it still, I especially try to get to know my characters. While I want the reader to know and understand the plot, I really do want to develop characters that will be loved and missed. I can see now the faults in that, and I’ve tried to fix them the best I could.
My thought process is wild and impossible for an outsider to understand, nor should they, but I’ve learned that longboarding is one of the best ways for me to think. I skate off, rolling for miles, and the constant rhythm of my wheels on the asphalt helps me gather my thoughts. I thought about how I’d like to see the story, or how I might change what I wrote the night before. I rarely take notes, and if I forget anything it’s my loss, but I’ve developed a belief that anything important enough I won’t forget. The reverse in that if I forget something it probably wasn’t crucial enough from the start.
At night or in class I’d take the thoughts I remembered and worked them into the story the best I could, and usually it worked. Sometimes on my own I’d even read certain parts aloud to see how they flow, but sometimes I even stumble on the most grammatically correct sentences, and I’m a bit nervous about reading aloud, even to the class. At midterm it went alright, but I’m always telling myself to slow down. However, I can honestly say I haven’t found a way to work in listening to my project. I guess the closest I have to that is listening to the feedback I get from Mr. Igoe and my peers. But I haven’t interviewed anyone like many other people, but I focused on the writing as much as I could.
I really enjoyed working on this as a senior project. I like writing a lot, and while it’s not going to play a major part in my college life, I still enjoy it in my free time and hope to continue it. I think this as a project has really improved my writing skill and my vocabulary, and I hope to get something published eventually.

Day 16

Finished the story this weekend. I have a few ideas for the next chapter, but i have to send this off to be printed  in time for wed. so I'm done with it for now. It's been real

Day 15

The entire story has been uploaded into InDesign, and now I'm basically done. Waiting to hear back from Igoe on a recent draft, but other than that the only thing left to do is print it. Word.

Day 14

The final stretch aproacheth. I just finished editing all four chapters. I looked for both poor grammar and changes there, as well as making sure events and hints all match up. I'm REALLY liking the way its looking, but it's tedious work. I'm probably working on hour 4 in the library today, looking forward to not working later and watching Sons of Anarchy...anyway.
I grabbed a trial copy of Adobe InDesign CS5, a very advanced publishing program. Its not easy to use, but I'm getting the hang of it now. I'm about to finish uploading chapter four into it, and from now on any changes will be made through there. I'm not sure how i'm going to publish/print the entire thing, it's about 20 pages right now, but i'll figure something out. Pc

Day 13

Finished a rough draft of the story I'm going to hand in. Starting edits on it today. It ended up at 25 pages, 1.5 spaced. I'm pretty stoked.

Day 12

So for the last few days I've been working on chapter four. I know how i want it to end and begin, but the middle is a bit hairy right now. I'm working that out now, but i have a few ideas. Chapter 3 turned out pretty well, but it still needs grammatical work.

Day 11

Spent last night and class today working on the last two chapters I've written. I finished chapter three yesterday and started chapter four last night, but spent most of today editing them, paying attention to grammar and such. I'm pretty stoked to see it come along as fast as it is, but I don't want to rush it. I'm probably going to continue writing chapter four tonight, and editing it tomorrow as well.

Day 10

I wrote about two pages single spaced last night. I was kind of inspired and ended up writing until I could barely hold my eyes open. I'm editing it now, and I'll probably start the next part later this week. This chapter isn't as long as the other two I have, but i don't think it needs to be the same length. It's about telling a story, not fitting a quota.

Day 9

So I'll admit, I haven't posted much at all this week, but it's for a good reason. I've been working furiously on my story and I'm stoked to say I've finished writing and editing he part I've been working on for the last month, and if anyone would like to read it you can find it here.
Now I've started working on the next part, which I'm liking the direction of. Speaking of which, I'm off to work on it now.

Day 8

So for the past few days I've been working on editing the second part to my story. Its been tedious work, but the first page, which i read to the class the other day, is pretty well finished...for now. I'm starting to get somewhere on the second page, its shaping up. I'm starting to realize that the first words i place down are going to get completely changed half the time, but as long as i write something the first time I'll have something to work with...right?

Tuesday, April 24, 2012

Day 7

For the last few days and nights I've been writing, thats about it. I've finished what one could call a chapter, but i don't want to label it, and have started another. I really like where it's going.

day6

Story ideas are flowing. Basic summery of what I've got off of my fall term story. The main character, Jayne, wakes up in 1885 on the land the well he fell into was on, and is discovered by a family that lives there. He learns from the woman who finds him of the land being "cursed." thats about as far as i got. I want to bring back the owl from the first story, and i for see killing off all the characters over the story. I like where its going.
If you want to read the first part, see here.

Day 5

So I just sat down today in front of a computer and wrote for the whole class. Pumped out two pages, and they need work but I like where its going. Tonight will be revising it a bit.

day 3 and 4

So i forgot to post yesterday, oh well.
Last few days in class I've done a little writing and I read a little out of What the Living Do, but I'm starting to rethink my proposal. My original idea is starting to bug me, and after rereading my short story from the fall i'm starting to think that I'd like to write a second part to that. There are a few questions, at least in my head, left unanswered that I'd like to explore with that.

Monday, April 9, 2012

Day2

Finished my proposal in class because I didn't finish it the night before so I didn't get to work on much in class. Oh well.

Just finished typing a poem related to my story. Also reread my last poems from winter term that inspired my story idea.

Day 1

Spend last class rereading Forky.
Spend the weekend wandering the woods and taking notes on ideas.
